We decided to get our employees involved in a practical, hands-on way with our Mandela Day project, by encouraging our ladies to knit adult and children’s scarves. It encouraged and made us proud to see the number of ladies who volunteered to knit!
On the 18th of July 2014, we travelled in convoy to the Thuthukani Centre in Ivory Park, and were overwhelmed by a very busy crowd of kids of all ages.
The Thuthukani Centre consists of a crèche, after school facilities and a feeding scheme for approximately 350+ poor and vulnerable children, between the ages of two and eighteen, from the Ivory Park community. They also employ people from the community to work in the food gardens, bakery and kitchen, teachers in the crèche, as well as caring for the children.
We were able to give a scarf to each of the children in the crèche as well as all the adult volunteers.
Röhlig-Grindrod also donated laminated flooring for their activities hall, wall heaters which were installed in the class rooms, a computer centre, garden tools, a watering hose for their food garden, a router, office chair, first aid kits, as well as sweets for each children.
Some of our staff made personal donations of curtains and assisted in fitting these in the centre.
It was a most fulfilling day spend at Thutukani making an impact on these children’s lives. Their smiles and excitement made it all worth it.
